Ethiopia criminalizes Skype, Paltalk and other Internet voice communications

The popular Skype is one of the internet phone services affected by Ethiopia's new telecommunications law.

June 12, 2012 (Africa Review) – The Ethiopian government has passed new legislation that criminalises the use of Internet-based voice communications such as Skype and other forms of Internet phone calling.

Authorities have also installed a new filtering system that monitors the use of the Internet in the tightly-controlled Horn of Africa country in a move seen as targeting dissidents.

The telecoms law strictly prohibits VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) which includes audio and video related social media communication, and the transfer of information packages through the fast growing global cyber networks.

It also authorises the government to inspect any imports of voice communication equipment and accessories, while also banning inbound shipments without prior permission. Read more…

June 12, 2012 (ethiopian reporter) – Presently thousands of Ethiopians in their youth are flocking to the Middle East. A person who happens to be at the immigration authority or at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs here in Addis Ababa is bound to be surprised by the throng of young women they witness teeming in and around the offices of these institutions.

For an onlooker the women seem to be gathered to stage a protest or to celebrate some kind of event, and not to obtain the documents needed to leave the country for work.

Nobody, including us, is arguing that Ethiopians should not be allowed to go abroad and earn their living by selling their labour. This is a right they enjoy. Read more…

Global peace index 2012: Ethiopia dropped

A Special Force Unit of OLA Killed 9 and Wounded 5

June 12, 2012 (Oromo Liberation Front) – A Special Force Unit of the Oromo Liberation Army operating in different parts of Oromia has continued its attack on enemy troops. Accordingly a Special OLA Unit killed 7 WoyaneEthiopian troops and wounded 4 in Northern Shoa zone Kuyyu County [Woreda] on June 4, 2012 by putting the enemy troops in a trap. The attacked enemy troop was said to have been dispatched to the area for the so called “search operation” of OLA.
