July 29, 2014 (UKEssays.com – TheUK’s Expert Provider of Custom Essays) — The Oromo people have become the largest ethnic group of Ethiopia in the last century. Ninety percent of the Oromo live on the plateau, a minority resides in the north of Kenya. With a population of over 30 million, the Oromo are the comprise 35 percent of the Ethiopian population. They are a Cushitic (Afro-asiatic language family settled between Tanzania in the south until Sudan and Egypt in the north) -speaking group, even if they have a total of 74 ethnically diverse language groups. In the past, they were probably a nomadic pastoralist group who modified their livelihood typology becoming sedentary farmers since the 16th-17th century. The Oromo were formerly called Galla during the past by non-Oromo Ethiopians, and it is easy to encounter this name in older texts but it is considered today a denigratory term. Historically, some people among the northern Amhara community used the label “Galla” derogatorily to label Oromos as well as to label populations of Shewa region or southern Amharas who were mostly mixed with Oromo. During the short Italian occupation interlude of Ethiopia, the term Oromo was preferably used than Galla. Read more…

Protests and online activism in recent months have brought a resurgence of ethnic Oromo nationalism in Ethiopia.
July 29, 2014, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Al Jazeera) - Aslan Hasan, a student belonging to the Oromo ethnic group in Ethiopia, was called either a guilt-ridden terrorist who committed suicide or an innocent victim of brutal state repression, depending on who you listen to.
His death came following a bout of violence in May, when Oromo students in several towns protested against a government plan for the capital Addis Ababa to expand into Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia’s largest and most populous federal region with around one-third of the nation’s over 90 million people. The dictatorial regime in Ethiopia-led by minority group, TPLF continued stepping up its efforts against press freedom by firing about 20 Oromo journalists from the state-run Oromia Radio and Television Organization (ORTO).
The Ethiopian regime dismissed the journalists from their job without giving any acceptable reason except accusing them of “narrow political views”. As some of the journalists who were among those dismissed said “the reality behind the firing of the Oromo journalists by the regime is the fact that the Oromo journalists exposed the Ethiopian government plan to expand the capital city or Finfinne by evicting Oromo farmers from their indigenous land which caused a wide scale protest through Oromia region against this plan.” The protest was organized by Oromo University and high school students together with local people resulting in the death, injury and the arrest of many students and locals after federal police fired live ammunition against protesters even though the protest was peaceful. In fact persecution, firing, harassment, arresting, torture of journalists and violation of press freedom is not a new incident in Ethiopia under the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front(EPRDF), as the government made a habit of it. We don’t need to look any farther, just two months ago the same government arrested three journalists and six bloggers, called zone 9 bloggers. I don’t remember a single year, which went by without the TPLF/EPRDF lead regime firing and arresting journalists since they came to power in 1991. Read more…
July 27, 2014 (Somaliland Press) — Almost five months after the death of former Oromia President Alemayehu Atomsa, an investigation into possible foul play has revealed extensive details in the inner party relations of EPRDF, credible inside sources have confirmed. Mr Atomsa was increasingly becoming isolated from the Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO) executive committee, according to a freelance investigative journalist who seeks to remain anonymous for safety reasons. Additional sources confirmed that the former president was in fact assassinated by the pro-Azeb Mesfin camp inside both TPLF and OPDO, with the overwhelming consensus pointing to poisoning as the methodology. RE: Staging Solidarity Hunger Strike to Protest Massacre, Torture, Detention of the Oromo People by the Ethiopian Government
Dear Mr. President
On May 9, 2014, the Oromo Community Organization of Washington D.C. area (OCO), the Oromo Youth Self-help Association (OYSA) and the International Oromo Women’s Organization (IOWO) held a large demonstration in front of the White House and State Department to express our deep concern and outrage about the massacre of Oromo students in April and May just for peacefully demonstrating against government land grab; some as young as nine years, from Ambo and other towns of Oromia Regional State by the TPLF aga’azi force and army of the Ethiopian government. Similar demonstrations were held in many state capitals of the United States, Europe, Australia, Middle East, and Africa to condemn the callous crime of the Ethiopian Government. Candle light vigils were also held in front of the White House on May 22, 2014, and in many states of the U.S and other countries, at different times, where Oromo communities reside. Read more…
