ETHIOPIA SPECIAL REPORT: Meles Zenawi’s death leaves a ticking time-bomb
September 3, 2012 (The Indian Ocean Newsletter) – The death of Ethiopian prime minister Meles Zenawi on the night of Aug. 20 will amount to no less than a time-bomb for the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and for its hard core, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) because it will ignite previously restrained ambitions of his would-be successors.
Haile Mariam Desalegn, former adviser to the Prime Minister and current vice prime minister, was named as acting leader. But there’s no saying Desalegn, an engineer from southern Ethiopia who was Meles Zenawi’s favorite, will be able to impose his authority in lasting fashion on TPLF bosses from the north of the country.
Despite an appearance of calm, the fight for power has already begun behind the scenes. Some TPLF leaders like Meles Zenawi’s widow, Azeb Mesfin, whose political ambitions grate on others in the party, could seek the top post for themselves or for one of their own. The leaders Amharas and Oromos from EPRDF are calling for the post to fall to a non-Tigrean. This report will help you examine the complicated equation of Meles Zenawi’s succession.

I don’t understand as to why people are not taking positive, empowering and life saving steps forwards inorder to improve the political, economic, social, etc. problems on the ground rather than self repeating endlessely about matters issues that have already ended by themselves.

Didaa, what I am saying is we have to hang those who are alive. For example Ayyaantu.com can hang picture of Azeb Mesfin instead of hanging picture of Meles who is already dead. The death of this fascist is really good news for Oromos. For the last 20 years, this nasty Tigrean murdered our people like we were animals; put out people in crowded jails were untold number perished; those who had the means and the ability to run walked hundreds of miles through deserts, killer forests ; and infested rivers to escape to neighboring and across the ocean. The best and the brightest Oromos were targeted to be eliminated leaving the innocents and the opportunists he can control, and control he did.
Meles looted Oromia and prospered Tigray. He did it the old fashion way–by mercilessly killing and destroying the livelihood of our people. Any Oromo who still did not get this and who thinks otherwise is the most stupid Neanderthal.
I feel so sad when I see clips of those child like Oromo who weep for Meles’s death and call him all kinds of names reserved for true heroes. I feel ashamed and sad that I can’t defend them and at a minimum help them keep whatever is left of their dignity.

As we know, the TPLF did double politic on the death of Zenawi. They showed to the world how they are strong. Ignoring the big problem in the county they exhibited to the world how Ethiopians love them. But when they killed (are killing) tenth of thousands Oromo children, destroyed the economy, burnt the forests, grabbed the land,— no body revenged them. They fill in Oromia as the fish in the ocean. I think you missed the point. Although Meles is physically dead his ground work for oppressing, robbing, humiliating,etc of the Oromo people is well alive. His Tigrean generals are vowing to continue his legacy as it was. That shows Meles is not dead. We should be united to hang him in a rope up. Still the rope is not yet tightened up on his neck. We are not saying that OLA and OLF need not fight. OLA and OLF belongs to all Oromos. On the contrary we as ordinary Oromos seeking chnage are saying that OLA and OLF need to fight and fight hard inorder to make significant difference rather than talking and talking as well as getting divided and divided endlessely as to become almost irrelevant and increasingly deep in crises.
That is why some of us think that the OLF and OLA also need NOT be only get isolated and conduct disconnected tiny military struggles here and there but also include broad based political, diplomatic, propaganda,local and global networkings inorder to support the military struggle itself.
